Boost or bust.

Last month, Adidas released the newest Crazylight line featuring its game-changing Boost Technology. First featured in their running shoes, Boost finds its way for the first time incorporated in a basketball shoe and that’s enough to get us all excited. Thanks to Adidas PH we’re back with another performance review featuring the Adidas Crazylight 4 Boost. It’s go time!

Adidas PH hooked us up with the Crazylight Boost Damian Lillard PE and also a special box that came with it that’s just too sick. The Dame PE comes in a full animal print mesh upper in grey with hints of black along the tongue and midsole. Red fills the 3 stripes and logo on the tongue as well as the outsole. The featured Boost cushion is exposed on the heel and the Dame logo is seen around the toe area. This is probably the best colorway out of the first set of Crazylights that released.

CUSHIONING

Here we go. Just hearing about Adidas adding Boost to their basketball line a few months back just got me all excited and couldn’t wait to try them on. Initially I thought they would feature a full boost system from the heel to the forefoot, but what we have is a targeted boost area just at the heel while EVA foam is used at the forefoot. Right of the box I could feel the Boost cushioning right away at the heel area and it felt great. This is the real deal. The eva foam forefoot did feel a little firm at first and I was concerned how this would feel on court. Also, just comparing it to the feel of the boost you wouldn’t want any other foam under your feet.

On the court the shoe felt good overall. The boost cushion on the heel was great and I really felt it on my landings and when I started my moves. It provided a smooth transition from your heel to the forefoot. This is great for guards and players who really do a lot of heel strike on their moves. Boost has got you covered. The EVA foam on the forefoot wasn’t an issue on the court and I didn’t feel that it was too firm or provided any discomfort on my feet. After a few runs it will start to break in and just feel even better.

FIT

The Crazylight Boost fits true to size but I did feel a little too snug on the toe box area so I went up half a size. If you have wide feet I would suggest you do the same. The fit is just excellent and its one of the highlights of the shoe. The upper is made of soft mesh material with Shockweb overlay that adds more support without restricting movement. Shockweb technology acts like a clear rubber cage that wraps around the mesh upper to keep your foot locked in while still allowing it to move comfortably. Combined with the mesh upper it acts almost like a second skin, moving along with your foot. The tongue features Techfit technology which you will find on Adidas’s base layer performance tees. It’s light and it wraps around your foot well and it stretches as you go along your movements. The plastic heal counter keeps your heel locked in and gives you a really snug feel which I really loved on this shoe. Another new feature on the Crazylight Boost is the new collar design which is cut low at the ankle area and rises towards the tongue to give stability like a hightop and mobility of a lowtop. I really loved this design tweak because it gives your foot that range of motion it needs while still keeping it stable around the ankle. The high cut on the tongue area really hugs your foot when you lace them up to the top, giving you that support you need.

BREATHABILITY

The soft mesh upper plus the Techfit material on the tongue allows the shoe to not only be light but also have great breathability. The Crazylight performs very well in this area and the mesh material just adds to the the overall comfort. For those who are very particular with this area won’t have any problems with the shoe.

TRACTION

A shoe built for speed needs good traction and the Crazylight does well in this area. I was initially concerned with the outsole pattern which goes vertical and not the usual horizontal or herringbone that most sneakers have. On the court it felt great and I didn’t have any issues with slipping. Lateral movements and cuts were excellent and forward motion and stops were also good. This is a crucial area of the shoe since it was mainly built for quick guards that need to be able to change speeds and direction without losing any ground.

SUPPORT

The main support comes from the fit which hugs your foot like a glove. The Shockweb overlay works well to keep your foot locked in and give you that support for cuts and sudden stops. The shoe keeps you low to the ground and has great court feel which I really love. Another interesting area is the base of the shoe is wider than the upper giving you that added stability so you don’t roll over on your ankles. Adidas Torsion technology keeps you stable on your transition from heel to forefoot. The high cut on the tongue area plus the heel counter really kept my heel locked in plus the added boost cushioning makes for a comfortable and steady ride.

Overall I really loved the Crazylight Boost. The excellent fit just kept my foot locked in while providing an overall comfortable ride with the soft mesh upper and the added Boost technology on the midsole. It’s a very light shoe that still provides the support and stability that you need. Just a really great shoe to hoop in and with a good price point this is easily a no brainer. I particularly like this Dame PE the best among the first set of colorways released. Check out all the colorways available at Adidas stores and retailers like Titan and Sneak Peek. The shoe retails at P6,995.
